Showbizz Buzz for Friday, August 1st
Arnold update: ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER now says he'll announce whether he'll run for governor of California or not on the Tonight Show Wednesday. The "Tony Soprano" of the rap world, SUGE KNIGHT, has violated his parole by punching a parking attendant, state corrections officials say. KNIGHT has been sent back to the slammer for ten months. Can you picture ASHTON KUTCHER and PAUL WALKER as Luke and Bo Duke in a film version of The Dukes of Hazzard? Talks are underway. BRITNEY SPEARS has been mentioned as a possible Daisy Duke! (The exclamation point is for the guys who're reading this). Remember the jerseys RUBEN STUDDARD wore on American Idol? Ruben's suing 205 Flava, Inc., the company that makes the jerseys, for wrongly trying to profit from his image after he started wearing them. CHRISTINA AGUILERA is fuming that her producers gave KELLY CLARKSON the song "Miss Independent." Christina co-wrote it originally for her Stripped album. Christina says, "I don't blame Kelly. The song is a good choice for her. I blame the people who didn't let me know what they were doing." JAM MASTER JAY from RUN-DMC feared for his life, and was carrying a gun at the time of his death. A Japanese clothing company has signed a deal with MICHAEL JACKSON to sell a clothing line inspired by the singer. In Japan, apparently, you can still dress like Michael Jackson, and not be shunned by the rest of society. MARK MCGRATH from SUGAR RAY has been spending time with hotel-heiress PARIS HILTON. What's the deal--she promised to retire: SINEAD O'CONNOR will release the ponderously titled two-CD set She Who Dwells in the Secret Place of the Most High Shall Abide Under the Shadow of the Almigthy on September 9th. The album features includes remakes of songs by ABBA, B-52's, EVERLY BROTHERS, and ARETHA FRANKLIN. Rapper DMX will appear on NBC's Third Watch this fall. X plays a rapper who expresses his hatred for "bootleggers" on stage. When one of his fans kills a bootlegger, he's arrested for inciting the murder. So now you know: MOBY insists that he be provided with ten pairs of cotton boxer shorts, and ten pairs of white cotton crew socks at every concert stop. Upcoming: SEAL will release Seal IV, his first album in five years, on September 9th; VERTICAL HORIZON's Go comes out September 23rd. Ever since actor SEAN HAYES saw CELINE DION's show in Vegas, there's been rumors that the diva would appear on his show, Will & Grace. Celine's publicist says she'll be too busy to film, while her management says there's no truth to the rumor, whatsoever. I'll keep you posted on this slow- breaking non-story. In theaters today: Gigli; American Wedding. --Greg Valentine Showbizz Buzz for Thursday, July 31st As far as I'm concerned, I'm doing a show every day (including all my showprep)! So I'll be posting entertainment stories here daily. Depending on how the website's done, this could be a daily feature on your site when I come to work for you! No "Governator" for California: ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER won't seek the state's top political office, according to Republican party officials. What we've learned about RUBEN STUDDARD from his Rolling Stone cover story: he weighs 360 pounds and stands six-foot-four; his album coming out in September will be called Soulful; He gets $5,000 for each American Idols concert he performs at; he has to tie CLAY AIKEN's tie every night before the concert. Can't tie his own tie? Guess Clay's NOT gay, after all! SIMON COWELL will appear on American Juniors Tuesday to preview the talent that shows up this Sunday at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. That's the first round of auditions for the next American Idol, which hits the air in January. 400,000 people attended yesterday's big SARS- benefit concert in Toronto. The mostly rock-fan crowd pelted JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE with empty water bottles--until he told them he was there to see THE ROLLING STONES, too. Justin, they don't dislike you. But like a lot guys, they don't get why you dumped Britney! JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE is close to signing a deal with McDonald's. They'd sponsor his European tour--he sing the jingle for Mickey D's new "I'm Lovin' It" ad campaign. MARIAH CAREY will play a female boxer in The Sweet Science, her first movie since the critically-panned, Glitter. Advice to Mariah: keep the gloves on when you meet the press--it might help the reviews. Favorite new law suit: ELIZABETH TAYLOR's gardener is suing the screen legend for ten years of back pay, approximately $300,000. He also claims he was fired because "he was not gay" like Taylor's other employees! SEAN "P. DIDDY" COMBS is spending $400,000 a week to rent a luxury yacht for his summer vacation. SMASHMOUTH has recorded three classic Schoolhouse Rock songs for a special CD that'll be available exclusively at Mervyn's from August 3rd to August 10th. Yes, they're doing your faves--the three songs are I'm Just A Bill, Conjunction Junction, and Interjection. Upcoming CD releases: PINK, Try This, November 11th; USHER, Confessions, November 18th. The TRAIN concert in Atlanta tonight is being filmed for a future pay-per-view special, and eventual DVD. The Bad Boys II soundtrack is the number one album in the country for the second week. --Greg Valentine Showbizz Buzz for Wednesday, July 30th That big benefit concert in Toronto is going on all day today, featuring THE ROLLING STONES, JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE, AC/DC, and RUSH, among others. Toronto Rocks! was organized to raise money for Toronto health care and tourism workers, who've suffered financially since the SARS epidemic swept the city. Internet users can see the Toronto Rocks! webcast at www.cbc.ca. Eyewitnesses at JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE's recent Chicago concert say girlfriend CAMERON DIAZ sat with the singer's mom, and clapped and sang along with every song. Later across town, people saw the frisky couple making out in the lobby of a posh hotel. EMINEM is such a big fan of Crank Yankers on Comedy Central that the rapper has recorded crank calls for the show. They're designing a puppet for him, and it'll air as part of the show's upcoming third season. Reggae rapper SEAN PAUL recently received a summons for using profanity on-stage at a recent performance in Jamaica. The ticket was for $20 (hey, at that price, he can afford to say "$#!%" all night). Who has the best bods in Hollywood, according to E! television? HALLE BARRY, followed by BRAD PITT, and JENNIFER LOPEZ. Sorta-Heavy D: Rapper-turned-actor HEAVY D lost 135 pounds after being rejected on Hollywood auditions. Now, what's left of the performer will play a mechanic in The Tracy Morgan Show, an upcoming sitcom for NBC. The 2003 Christina Aguilera Look-A-Like Contest is underway. The winner gets a grand prize that's "so good, it's still under wraps," according to the singer's web site. Cool--where do I send my pic? Details here. Finding Nemo is now the biggest-grossing animated movie of all-time. It's made $313 million so far, a million more than the previous record-holder, The Lion King. Where's RUBEN STUDDARD's cover of Rolling Stone magazine? The big guy defeated CLAY AIKEN, but RS gave the cover to Clay! Ruben finally gets his with the issue coming out this Friday. Maybe they were saving him for one of their "double issues!" Head's up: one movie reviewer just called the J-LO/ BENNIFER AFFLECK flick Gigli "worse than Swept Away," the MADONNA stink-a-roo. He also says real- life lovers Jen and Ben have "no chemistry." Of course, J-lo is playing a lesbian… MICHELLE BRANCH, SIMPLE PLAN, and CHINGY perform tonight on the WB's Pepsi Smash concert series. --Greg Valentine Showbizz Buzz for Tuesday, July 29th PRESIDENT BUSH has ordered flags at half-staff tomorrow for BOB HOPE's private burial. A public memorial will be held August 27th. BEYONCE KNOWLES and GOOD CHARLOTTE will join CHRISTINA AGUILERA and COLDPLAY as performers at the MTV Video Music Awards August 28th. JANET JACKSON is reportedly engaged to her rap mogul boyfriend JERMAINE DUPRI. The fact that we know this almost a miracle. Janet's two previous marriages were kept secret from the public for many years. Rumors that BEN and J-LO are getting married in Hawaii next month were started by AFFLECK himself--as a prank on journalists interviewing him about Gigli, the couple's upcoming movie (or, I'm guessing, to get more publicity for that movie). KID ROCK and AEROSMITH could be joining BRITNEY SPEARS and MARY J. BLIGE for that free concert to kick off the NFL season September 4th in Washington DC. ABC will broadcast the event. BRITNEY SPEARS long-talked-about NASCAR movie finally has a name (Trading Paint) and a finished script. Note that "finished script" is NOT the same as "good script." It's safe to return to the movie theater (she's only BEHIND the camera this time): MADONNA is producing a romantic comedy called She Rocks, described as "Working Girl set in the music world." A star-studded LUTHER VANDROSS video for "Dance with My Father" debuts today on AOL's popular First Look service. Luther's recovering from that stroke, so big names have stepped up to appear in the video, including CELINE DION, STEVIE WONDER, BRIAN MCKNIGHT, BABYFACE, RUBEN STUDDARD, and others. The Bachelors? Bravo debuts a gay-themed reality dating show tonight. Boy Meets Boy has a gay man named JAMES looking for love among 15 men. The twist is that James doesn't know that some of the perspective love matches are "closet straights!" Out DVD and video today: Daredevil, starring BENNIFER AFFLECK. --Greg Valentine Showbizz Buzz for Monday, July 28th Millions of fans worldwide are mourning the loss of legendary entertainer and Cleveland native Bob Hope, who passed away Sunday at age 100. More on the life and times of this beloved man at CNN.com. The Spy Kids sequel nipped Lara Croft and Seabiscuit by a nose at the box office this weekend. The family adventure flick scored $32.5 million. A Colorado judge has decided to allow cameras into the courtroom for KOBE BRYANT's August 6th hearing. LIZA MINNELLI and DAVID GEST have separated. Do you know everything there is to know about U2? There's a trivia contest on their website. Winners get copies of the new U2 design book, Stealing Hearts At A Traveling Show. MADONNA's ad for the Gap debuts on VH1 tonight. It's actually a longer, "director's cut" version of the commercial, in which Madonna and MISSY ELLIOT duet on Into The Groove. Commercials have "director's cuts" now? --Greg Valentine Showbizz Buzz for Friday, July 25th MTV Video Music Award nominations: MISSY ELLIOT leads the pack with eight. JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE has seven. CHRISTINA AGUILERA and COLDPLAY have been confirmed as performers. Congrats to the original man-in-black JOHNNY CASH on his six nominations for the MTV's VMAs! Joey will debut in Friends old time-slot September 2004. The spinoff series will be set in Los Angeles, and star (naturally) MATT LEBLANC. CLARKSON performs as Rock and Roll Hall of Famer BRENDA LEE. KOBE BRYANT just bought his wife a $4 million, eight-carat diamond ring. ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER keeping quiet about whether he'll seek the governorship in California's upcoming recall election. He'll have to make up his mind in the next couple days. Scary-thought-of-the-day: JERRY LEWIS told BILL O'REILLY that MARILYN MONROE never had affairs with JOHN or BOBBY KENNEDY because "she was involved with me." SHERYL CROW will play a rare club gig as a benefit concert for a sick friend who has a long-term illness. The show's at New York City's Bowery Ballroom, July 28th. For those of you sitting on the edge of your seat, waiting to learn who techno star MOBY is endorsing for president in 2004, it's… JOHN KERRY! This has been another edition of "Things I Learn From Actually Reading the Tedious Postings on Moby's Website Because I Have Waaaaayyy Too Much Free-Time." BuyMusic.com has launched an online music store. It offers 300,000 songs for download (that's 100,000 more than Apple's iTunes).
