Music's hard-living Man In Black, Johnny Cash, died early today at Baptist Hospital in Nashville from complications of diabetes. Cash had recently spent two weeks hospitalized at Baptist, but was released earlier this week. Cash recorded 1,500 songs, and is a member of the Rock, Country and Songwriters Halls of Fame. He was 71.

Actor John Ritter died suddenly last night after collapsing on the set of his show 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter. Ritter, known best as Jack Tripper on Three's Company, was rushed to the hospital, where surgeons were unable to save him. Doctors say Ritter had an undetected heart condition. He was 54.

David Letterman will announce that his longtime girlfriend, Regina Lasko, is pregnant on tonight's Late Show. Letterman's Friday night shows are taped in advance on Thursdays. Guest Cuba Gooding Jr. hands Dave a cigar and says, "Life is over as you know it."
Will they or won't they? Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck say their wedding's been postponed. Matt Damon was supposed to be Ben's best man at Sunday's wedding. Sources say Damon has remained in London filming a movie. We'll see what happens...
"I'm Baht-man" (English accent): British actor Christian Bale has won the role of the Caper Crusader, beating out several big Hollywood names. Cameras start rolling on an updated Batman flick in February, with Christopher Nolan (Memento) directing.
Britney Spears is on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. Britney claims she could've forced Justin Timberlake to change his "Cry Me A River" video before it was released. The two exes record for the same label, and Brit says the company gave her the option to veto the video, which is widely recognized as a slam on her by Justin. Britney didn't--even though she hadn't seen it. From the sound of the article in RS, if she would've seen it in advance, we wouldn't have.
Once was not enough? Kelly Osbourne has signed with Sanctuary Records, who'll re-release her album Shut Up under the new name Changes. This'll be perfect for people who loved hating the album the first time, but wish there were more opportunities to make fun of it.
Jewel has cancelled her North American tour due to the death of her bass player, Terome "T-Bone" Hannon. Hannon died of a stroke. Jewel will start doing some solo acoustic shows soon to promote her album 0304.
People magazine has released it Best and Worst Dressed Lists. Looking good: Kate Hudson, Nicole Kidman, Salma Hayek, Cameron Diaz and Halle Berry. In need of a makeover: Britney Spears, Tara Reid and Lara Flynn Boyle.
Bon Jovi releases This Left Feels Right, an album of their biggest hits re-done acoustically, November 4th.
Conan O'Brien celebrates 10 years as host of NBC's Late Night with a big primetime special Sunday night at 9:30 p.m.
New in theaters: Matchstick Men; Once Upon a Time in Mexico; Cabin Fever.

Johnny Cash has been released from Baptist Hospital in
Nashville where he’d been under care for the last two
weeks with a stomach ailment. The hospitalization forced
the 71-year-old country legend to miss the MTV Video Music Awards,
for which he was a surprise nominee.
Madonna’s taped an Oprah appearance that’ll air Tuesday.
Maddy doesn’t perform on the show, but at one point during
the interview, Oprah Winfrey gets her to break down in tears.
Madonna, save the tears for Barbara Walters’ Oscar special.
(Hey, two words you never see in the same sentence: “Madonna” and “Oscar.”)
Sharon Osbourne reveals she recently left Ozzy
for a short time, because our favorite “Father Knows Bats”
won’t give up the prescription drugs. Sharon tells Barbara
Walters on tomorrow’s 20/20 that she was gone four days,
and that Ozzy did stop drinking while she was away.
Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck released a statement
claiming they’ve postponed their wedding Sunday due
to “excessive media attention.” It should be pointed
out that most of the press that’s descended on
Santa Barbara, California, are sticking around just in case.
Retailers report John Mayer’s new CD Heavier Things
is selling well and is on-track to be number one next
week. That’s a big difference from Mayer’s Room For Squares album,
which took months to climb the charts.
American Idol Ruben Studdard turns 25 tomorrow with a
big “Moroccan-themed” party, complete with belly dancers,
in his hometown of Birmingham, Alabama. Ruben knows a
thing or two about belly dancing. Well, he just calls it “walking!”
Clay Aiken’s first single from his self-titled debut
album will be a song called “Invisible.”
Ryan Seacrest’s upcoming daily talk show will be
called On Air with Ryan Seacrest, and will broadcast
from the Hollywood and Highland entertainment
complex where the Oscars are held.
Need the perfect Christmas gift for that Linkin Park
fan who loves listening to and watching his or her
favorite band in concert? Umm, this should work:
the band plans to release a live CD and DVD in November.
The “Chong” of Cheech and Chong fame will spend
the next nine months in jail, and pay a $20,000 fine.
Tommy Chong was convicted of selling bongs and other
drug paraphernalia over the Internet. Yeah, but at
least he didn’t download music—-that could get you in some real trouble!!
No Doubt have recorded a cover of Talk Talk's 1984
hit "It's My Life" for a greatest hits collection due in November.
Fox has ordered a full season of The O.C., a new
show that’s done well for the network this summer.
Seal, who released his first album in five years
this week, performs on Letterman tonight.

England’s Daily Mail reports Jennifer Lopez is making Ben Affleck
sign a no-cheating prenup that allows her to go after half his
money if he strays. And add ABC to the growing list of news
organizations that say the couple’s wedding will be Sunday
at the Biltmore Four Seasons in Santa Barbara, California.
Last Thursday night’s Redskins-Jets game was the most-watched
television program of the week. The NFL season opener pulled
in 19.2 million viewers, the most of any show since the
American Idol finale in May.
Dave Matthews will play a free concert in New York City’s
Central Park on September 24th. Stars who’ve held major
concerts there in the past include Simon & Garfunkel,
Garth Brooks, Sting, Elton John and Diana Ross.
The record industry has just settled its first lawsuit with one
of the 261 file-swappers it’s suing. A 12-year-old girl has
apologized for downloading copyright-protected music, and
her mother’s been forced to pay $2,000. And I think the
record industry also wants the little girl’s milk money.
Just before midnight on September 3rd, somebody downloaded
Avril Lavigne’s “Complicated,” and Apple’s online music
store, iTunes, marked its ten millionth download.
Renee Zellweger is packing on the pounds for the
sequel to Bridget Jones’ Diary. Her secret to gaining
a quick 30 pounds? Doughnuts, Doritos and Starbucks.
Now that’s a celebrity diet I could go on!
Barenaked Ladies and Train perform at Alcatraz,
the famous former-prison located in the middle of
the San Francisco Bay, on October 16th. It’ll be
cybercast at t-mobile.com.
Every VH1 Behind The Music has one: a “former manager
who stole millions from us!” Well one of them is fighting
back. Aerosmith’s ex-manager, David Krebs, is suing the
band for libel. He disputes he stole their millions. He
says he wants his reputation back—-and some (more) of
the band’s millions!
Norah Jones is halfway finished with her new album.
The follow-up to the big Grammy winner,
Come Away With Me, should be released in February.
Already? Nominations for the American Music Awards will
be announced Tuesday. The show’s being held in November
this year. That’s a first. Producers moved it from
January to give it some “breathing room” from
 other awards shows.
Is Gwyneth Paltrow going to sing on the next Coldplay album? A
British tabloid says, “Yes.” Those who forget history are
doomed to repeat it--does the name “Yoko” mean anything to anybody?
Hilary Duff's Metamorphosis is
the number one album on the Billboard charts.

The makers of Slip ‘N Slide are suing the makers of Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star
because they claim the Wham-O product is used improperly in a scene that shows
actor David Spade skidding to a painful halt. Please! What’s next? Wiffle Ball
sues America’s Funniest Home Videos for all the bat-to-the-crotch shots?
Walt Disney Co. is experimenting with a self-destructing DVD. You’d
buy it at the convenience store for about five bucks, View it, and 48
hours later the disc would become unwatchable. As opposed to the movie
Gigli, which is unwatchable right now.
Gigli co-stars Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are rumored to be
tying the knot this Sunday. Magazines from across the world
are offering big bucks for their wedding pics. But J-Lo says
no way. Ben’s publicist adds, "It's been a joy to say no in
20 languages."
The parents of Aaliyah have reached an undisclosed settlement in
their lawsuit against the company that flew the plane that
crashed and killed the singer in the Bahamas two years ago. The
company has been accused of overloading the plane by 700 pounds,
and not being authorized to fly commercial flights in and out of the Bahamas.
Who else don’t the Dixie Chicks like? They’ve gone on record
saying that Arnold Schwarzenegger should stick to movies. A small
but physically marvelous contingent of bodybuilders in Austria
are crushing puny Dixie Chick CDs with their bare hands right now.
This year's Women Rock! concert stars Celine Dion, Anastacia,
Mandy Moore, Mya, Dolly Parton and Kenny Loggins. The
benefit for breast cancer research will be taped
September 30th in Hollywood, and will air October 23rd on Lifetime.
Mark Burnett, the producer that brought us Survivor and
The Restaurant, is considering a possible gambling-themed
reality show. The Casino would be filmed in Las Vegas or
Atlantic City and presumably take us behind-the-scenes.
A few of my twenties will appear in the big “money-counting scene.”
Fred Durst, who likes to make all sorts of wild claims,
says his band Limp Bizkit is in talks with Oscar-winner
Halle Barry to star in the first video from their upcoming

“Behind Blue Eyes.”

Britney Spears’ new album is set for a November 25th

October 4th.
Also out today: Nick Lachey (98 Degrees), Soulo;
Seal, Seal IV.

It’s the other meaning of “file.” The recording industry filed 261 lawsuits today against
individual internet file-swappers. A spokesperson for the rich and greedy record companies
says the suits target “major offenders,” who’ve made an average of 1,000 copyrighted song
files available to other internet users. Quick…count those MP3s on your computer!
How you doing? Friends star Matt LeBlanc and his wife Melissa McKnight are expecting
their first child. The celebrity couple didn’t even get to make the announcement
themselves. Jay Leno blurted it out on the Tonight Show.
Thursday is the second anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Bruce Springsteen,
Cher, Aerosmith, Kiss, and Toby Keith are among the acts currently on tour
that’ll take the night off in remembrance.
How slow was it at the multiplex this weekend? So slow that David Spade’s
Dickie Robert’s: Former Child Star was the top flick with its modest earnings of $7 million.
How easy is it to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame?
So easy that David Spade got one Friday.
Kimberly Locke, who finished third last season on American Idol,
has just signed a recording contract with Curb Records.
Chad Kroger wants you to know that Nickelback’s upcoming album was recorded using the
same soundboard that Metallica, Mötley Crüe, Aerosmith and Bon Jovi used in the
80s and 90s. Chad also wants you to know he's wearing John Holmes' old jock strap.
Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel have scheduled a press conference for tomorrow.
Speculation is the two will announce their first tour in more than a decade.
Jennifer Lopez will follow Britney Spears’ lead and do one of those sexy photo
spreads for W magazine. Sexy garters, red stilettos, leather and rubber
lingerie. You know, stuff guys like, unless you’re…
Ellen DeGeneres debuts her new talk show today, with guests
Jennifer Aniston and Macy Gray.
Not exactly Ozzfest. The Sharon Osbourne Show debuts next Monday, featuring a chat with
Justin Timberlake, and the music of Wynonna Judd.
Warren Zevon, who sang the 70s hit “Werewolves of London,” died yesterday
from terminal lung cancer. He was 56.
